Boutique Hotel

Heavily touted as the first Croatian-member of the "Leading Hotels of the World," this boutique hotel and luxury spa is located in a historic waterfront building along Hvar's waterfront harbor. Within walking distance of town center, the hotel is perched on the walking promenade, facing the old city center with views of the Cathedral on the Venetian-style piazza. While Hvar has yet to develop the restaurant and shopping facilities of a true luxury resort town, there is little doubt that the local hotels are on their way to becoming global hotspots. The Andriana lobby features a chic "lounge-minded" bar and Mediterranean style seafood restaurant with lively harbor front terrace. With no direct beach access, a decadent rooftop swimming pool features a retractable roof system for year-round enjoyment. Recently added to the hotel was a small spa, one of the best on the island, with individualized massage treatments and fitness activities including a signature Yogahvar, meditation and martial arts.

The Room

Subsidized by the Croatia government, the 8-resort Suncani-chain dominates the Hvar hotel scene with a rooster of historic properties held captive by bad Soviet-era architecture for most of the 20th Century. Virtually every one of the resort hotels is slated for refurbishment, starting with 2006 debut of Hotel Riva and subsequent 2007 opening of the Adriana. Modern on the precipice of sterility, the interior rooms feature a Scandinavia-meets-Hollywood theme of glossy hardwood floors, minimalist Ikea-esque furnishings and walls strung with oversize pop art. The Suncani Hotel Group would benefit from using a multitude of designers, as the new guest rooms of the Riva, nearby-Amfora and Adriana look almost identical. With 50 rooms and 9 suites, most rooms of the Adriana feature water-views with oversize picture windows and the occasional balcony. Rooms offer modern conveniences like flat screen TVs, stocked mini-bar and complimentary high-speed Internet that is fasted than most NYC hotels. Bathrooms feature uber-modern vanities and fixtures exposed to main sleeping area, the showers offer chrome accents and sleek shower heads - but with inexcusably cheap toiletries.
